Fly on the wall #2

“Skootle,” says my Moonman, happy to be home again. “This trip was quite uhmmm… interesting.”

“Interesting geology?”

“Well, yes. And other things… One evening the crew had a night out in Montrose, which is about 40 minutes south of Aberdeen. Nothing much happens there at 2 a.m. on a Monday morning. In fact, we were lucky to have found an open nightclub at all.”

“And was there some sort of trouble?”

“No… I decided I would only have ONE drink and go home.”

“Good plan. And then…?”

“Well, the Second Mate asked me to dance…”

I have a few moments to try and come up with some sort of picture here. These projects often have mixed crews, with female engineers or geologists…

“Well, the Second Mate was a big, burly ox of a man, with a twinkle in his eye. I couldn’t turn him down.”

“Well, of course not,” I chuckle.

I imagine the scene: a smoky, dimly lit pub, some people sitting quietly meditating over their last drink, the barman wiping the counter, and on the dance floor, the Moonman and the Second Mate, cheek to cheek, the Moonman with a rose between his teeth. The Second Mate, bigger  even than the mighty Moonman, deftly steering his partner around in a wide turn… (Well, OK, that would have been really funny, but I knew they weren’t ballroom dancing.)

“So we danced,” continues my Moonman, “and we sang along with the music…You make me feel like I’m the only girl in the world.”

“Awww, how sweet!”

“You laugh, Skootle, but it wasn’t that funny leopard crawling back to the ship afterwards.”

“Why were you leopard crawling? I thought you only had one drink?”

“I only had one drink at a time,” Moonman says with a crooked grin.

Yay, fun. Fun is good. (And it makes for a fabulous story, too!)
